Throughout the year 2010 our Relief Society had several on-going activities:
· Once a month we had a Relief Society temple trip to the St. George temple providing the opportunity for sisters to attend the temple during the morning or an afternoon of a week day. These trips also provided fellowship and friendship to each sister who took advantage of this opportunity. Sister Molly Houston provided the transportation for the morning group and Sister Pamela France provided the transportation for the afternoon group.
· Book Club also met once a month and afforded sisters the opportunity to go out to dinner and have a lively discussion of a book chosen for that month.
· Our sisters worked faithfully to fulfill their Convalescent home service which included conducting and participating in a Relief Society meeting twice a month. Also, many sisters provided service by going when assigned to teach lessons, say prayers, playing the piano or to help with grooming by doing hair.
· Evening Relief Society meetings were held either on the second Tuesday or the second Thursday of each month. Coordinated by Sister Linda McCown with assistants Sister Starla Hirschi and Sister Stephanie Clark these meetings had a diversity of purposes such as a celebration of the Relief Society birthday, homemaking projects such as quilts, meal preparation or gardening, visiting teaching focus, humanitarian projects and/or improving talents. The December evening meeting is a culmination of the year for all sisters. A Progressive Dinner is provided. This year we had hors d’oeuvres Sister Stephanie Clark’s home, soup entrée’ at Sister Molly Houston’s and then on to Sister Peg Schmutz’s home for dessert, a short lesson and a beautiful sharing of Christmas hymns by a local barbershop quartet, “Borderline”.
· A needlework group of all ages met each week of the month at Sister Judy King’s home. Women of all ages were welcome to attend and did. It was such a successful group that women from other wards also came to partake of the knowledge shared about various types of needlework such as knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery. Sisters brought whatever they were working on and shared it with all. This provided an informal opportunity for fellowship and friendshipping.
· Sisters met at the church once a week to play a game of volleyball and on another evening met at the Kanab City Park to walk a few miles together. Both of these activities were enjoyed by many sisters and increased their physical health and gave them an opportunity to get together with other sisters to friendship and have fun. These activities were spearheaded by Sister Starla Hirschi. A group of women met Monday through Friday at the La Estancia Clubhouse indoor swimming pool for an arthritis class beginning in April 2010. Sister Pamela France led this group as a certified arthritis class instructor. It was an opportunity to begin the day with exercise and the hot tub after the class gave opportunity for support and understanding for each sister.
· Sister Shauna Crosby as our Food Storage specialist provided the opportunity for sisters to purchase in bulk food from the church distribution center one month and the following month provided opportunity at the church for that food to be canned for long term storage.
An opportunity for service came to all sisters in our ward as we worked to provide support and love to families who suffered from health problems. Sister Debbie Gillespie as our compassionate service person did a fine job of orchestrating this throughout the year. We had a sister Starla Hirschi who was battling cancer which gave us all in the 3rd Ward the opportunity to participate in a miraculous fund raiser that earned $12,000.00 for the uninsured family. The Relief Society was able to provide the dinner for the fund raising event and provide other service with donations and sales. We also provided meals for this family on an on-going weekly basis. It was true charity in action!
Our Relief Society Presidency made it a goal to make visits to each sister’s home. These visits were scheduled faithfully by our secretary, Darlene Anderson. We continue to work on this goal throughout 2010 and we continue to strive towards accomplishing this goal in 2011.
Sister Molly Houston and Sister Beverly Willis did a marvelous job of the creation of our flyer, “Sisters in Unity”, for distribution each Sunday. This flyer provided a synopsis of our lesson, recipes, spotlighting a sister, birthdays, coming events, and announcements. This flyer was also used to fellowship those less active sisters or sisters unable to come out due to health.
